The Den In Carlsbad

Had a blast last week doing a fun photo shoot at Mary Steely’s awesome fashion forward store located in downtown Carlsbad. I highly recommend taking a peek in this fabulous adorable boutique. The atmosphere is so relaxed and you will be greeted with warm helpful customer service. One of the things that is so special about this store is the fact that it is suitable for all ages. My lovely stepdaughter Isabella was visiting us on her summer break from NYC and we did a little shopping.  We’ve got 28 years between us and we can find great options of clothing for both of us! Another close friend of mine Kim and her son Ethan came in and did some shopping as well. It was so enjoyable to be in one location and each of us able to find a special item or accessory to add to our wardrobe! The dress and jumpsuit are from the Tart collection the hat from San Diego Hat Co sunglasses from Electric and my stunning Bliss ring which is Black Onyx  finished in a matte 22k gold vermeil by the talented Geoffrey Scott. Isabella’s bracelet is the Sophisticate in Espresso. Accessorizing completes the outfit and makes a statement.

THE O.C. “HAUTE SPOT”

I love fine dining in an environment that is energetic, yet elegant at the same time. About 40 minutes north of our beautiful north county San Diego is a place called Mastro’s Ocean Club located in Newport Beach. Just about one mile north up coast highway from the breathtaking {I call it the mini French Riviera} downtown Laguna Beach. I was fortunate enough to live in Laguna for 12 years and proud to call it my old stomping grounds. Such a wonderful community that is so full of life and warmth. The town is eclectic and full of amazing art galleries along with lots of fun!

As you pull in front of the gorgeous entrance to valet you are always greeted with a smile and a pretty hot guy to take your car. Upon entering the large beautiful glass and dark wood doors, you are again greeted by the amazing staff and a giant water wall to gaze at. We always like to sit in the bar area as it is packed with great people watching and lots of energy! If you want less action going on request to be seated in one of the dining areas, as you can have better conversation without distraction. There is also a fabulous piano bar from which a duet entertains in that area. First come first serve if you want to actually dine on the piano, and I mean literally dine on the piano. Be VIP front row for the  music – everything from Elton John and Frank Sinatra to more current artists.

The cocktail menu is filled with all sorts of creative specialty drinks to please anyone’s desire or concoction of choice. I’m a straight up Grey Goose martini girl with a squeeze of lemon. I have had their delicious Lemon Drop which is excellent because it’s not too sweet, yet the rim has a little sparkly edge of sugar and the dry ice makes it fun to sip and to look at for that matter. They serve up a nice big glass and they even leave the shaker at your table with the extra to finish off. You gotta love that! I highly recommend this martini and they also have a few gluten-free choices as well. The Mastro’s Mojito is a must try too.

The menu is amazing and is obviously known for the steak. The seafood choices are to die for as well. For starters we usually get what is called the Seafood Tower. It is literally a tower custom-made just for you. Choices include crab, lobster, shrimp, snow crab, oysters on the half shell and Alaskan king crab legs just to name a few. It is a work of art and once again they throw in some dry ice to make your tower a PARTY! My hubby always gets the Bone in Filet and it is always cooked to perfection. Customer service is always an A+, hence why this place is consistently packed. The sides are endless, and you can never go wrong with the gorgonzola mac and cheese or the lobster mashed potatoes. Don’t think I don’t get a double work out in the day of or the day after. It is truly worth the indulgence. YOLO right?! The roasted brussels sprouts, sautéed mushrooms and sautéed asparagus are also delicious.

Last but not least, the Mastro’s signature butter cake  is pretty sinful.  It is served with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream in the center and surrounded by fresh berries and drizzled with a raspberry sauce. It is truly a must have or take some home. I have indulged the next day with the leftovers and it is truly yummy!

The atmosphere has such a great vibe and high energy. A great spot for a romantic date night or a fun place to hang with your girlfriends. There’s always a lot of singles a mingling, so if that’s your deal this is the place to be seen. One of the most unparalleled dining experiences ever and it will keep you coming back for more. As we were leaving, my stepdaughter and I had our photo taken with the “Bodyguards”  there must have been some VIP’s there that night. Isabella did mention she saw some people from Housewives of Orange County. You never know who you might see at this place, some well-known people have been known to drop in so keep your eyes open for the celebs!! Make sure you make your reservations well in advance as there is a high demand for dining here. Drinks are flowing, music is playing and energetic chatter is happening. Always a great night in the OC and you can’t go wrong with the scene!

Check it out, I guarantee you will be happy you did!

Boutique Peek : THE DEN

Nestled in the cozy downtown area of Encinitas and Carlsbad is a fab little store called The Den. A fashion forward boutique, The Den caters to both men and women. Owner, Mary Steely is a local resident who opened her Carlsbad store in 2005. The Den finds inspiration from all elements of life to appeal to a variety of tastes. I happen to like all styles of clothing so this is a perfect little gem to pop into. Without fail I always manage to find a MUST have item. We all need another fun something to grab from our closets right ladies and gents?!

Mary carries the basic essentials to custom designed threads influenced by music and art. Married to Josh Steely, lead guitarist of Daughtry, they are both locals and are one of the most adorable couples ever. Now and then when Josh isn’t on tour, he is known to hang out with the kids at the store, grab Mary and whisk her away to lunch. Honestly, if you ever see them together, the love is radiant! The staff that work at both locations are oh so friendly and welcoming, they make you feel at home, as if you were in the comfort of your own “Den”

Some of her designers are Tart, Hudson and Sky for women. She has an array of selections for men as well, 7 Diamonds and Howe to name a few creative lines of clothing. She carries a sexy and playful line of lingerie too. A fun accent for any outfit you might choose.

THE LOOK | MICHAEL STARS

There is something for everyones style in this store. It has chic and sophisticated styles, along with a bohemian beach girl feel. Maxi dresses that are for a casual day on the beach or a tad dressier for a night out on the town. If you want a rocker kind of street smart feel you can find that as well in this creative little boutique. The Den continues to bring fashion forward merchandise and is always looking for the new designs that will define future clothing needs.

STYLE ON WHEELS | MICHAEL STARS

A couple of weeks ago on June 28th, was a celebration for the 5 year anniversary of the Encinitas location. It is on highway 101 and Encinitas Blvd in the loft property. They served up some amazing refreshments, give aways and  raffle prizes along with an exclusive appearance from the Michael Stars curbside boutique. Talk about FUN! Can’t wait to see what Mary comes up with next year for another celebration party. So for all of you who local peeps and vacationing visitors who haven’t stepped into The Den before, it is a MUST for a fantastic shopping experience. Another little gem in our own backyard.

Get on your beach cruisers and stop on by!

Smiles:-)

I am so fortunate to have been born and raised along the California coast line.  I grew up in a beautiful beach community called Belmont Shore.  I have always appreciated the people, things and places that have surrounded me where I live.  I currently live in Encinitas and have  had the fortunate experience of living in the “OC” Laguna Beach.
